Cyber Security companies and regional representatives recently took part in a trade mission to Maryland, US as part of the Midlands Engine Cyber initiative. The mission, that took place between 9-13 October 2017, was the second year which included attending Cyber Maryland.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in June 2017 to build a relationship between Maryland and the Midlands. The UK delegation was represented by Midlands based businesses and Universities all looking to develop into the US networks.

Maryland is recognised as the cyber-security lead in the US for national and international defence expertise. The State has the largest concentration of cyber-security companies in the world and is also home to the headquarters of the US National Security Agency (NSA).

The Midlands is recognised as a region with an excellent cyber-security eco system, providing research, products and services commercially and into UK Government and many other international partners. The businesses who took part in the trade mission Midlands included; borwell, Data Solver, Deep Secure, Ice Blue, Immersive Labs, Intercede, Manged Enterprise Technologies, QinetiQ, Skylon Park and the University of Wolverhampton.

The mission provided a unique opportunity for the Midlands based companies who were able to explore the American cyber-security sector businesses and organisations. The delegates were hosted on the first day by CAMI (Cybersecurity Association of Maryland Inc), a State wide, non-profit organisation formed in 2015 to identify Maryland’s cybersecurity product and service companies. CAMI and Midlands Engine Cyber are currently discussing a reciprocal associate membership package.

The following two days were spent at the prestigious Cyber Maryland Conference, where Midlands Engine Cyber hosted the delegates on the dedicated Midlands pavilion.

The mission was funded by the Department of International Trade (DIT) on behalf of the Midlands Engine to develop trade and investment opportunities between the US and UK. The Midlands Engine Cyber initiative has further activity planned, which will include a joint pavilion with Maryland Department of Commerce at the prestigious Infosecurity 2018.

Mike Gill, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Commerce, said: “Through our partnership with Midlands Engine, technologies developed in Maryland now reach global markets, and U.K. companies are able to explore U.S. markets as well as opportunities in Maryland’s cyber community.”

Gary Woodman, Chief Executive of Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “Thank you to all of our UK delegates and American colleagues for making the trade mission so successful. The week provided our Midland based businesses several leads and opportunities and we look forward to continue building upon these established relationships to widen business opportunities in the Midlands.”
